ADT is number two on our list of best wireless home security systems, and it’s no wonder. They became the first home security system network in 1874 and have grown ever since to become the largest home security provider in North America. ADT Security Services offers more services than the typical security company. Their wireless systems include free professional installation, and if you’d rather lease equipment instead of buy, ADT has options for that.

It's easy to set up and, thanks to its magnetic, swiveling base,it can be installed almost anywhere indoors. The video looks sharp; night vision is clear; the camera can be used as an intercom; and it interacts with the Nest Thermostat and the Nest Protect smoke detector, as well as numerous third party smart home devices. But to really make use of the camera's features, you'll have to shell out $10 or more per month for the Nest Aware program, which gives you access to cloud storage, person detection and customizable activity zones. Plus, Ring's app has a neighborhood watch feature, which lets you see what's happening in your hood from other Ring users, as well as police and fire departments. When we signed the Vivint agreement we didn't select the premium service. That service costs an extra $10 per month and covers all of your equipment and the cost of the service calls. Our Vivint salesman told us all of our equipment was covered by warranty for the entire length of the contract 60 months. What he didn't tell us was that it would cost $49 to have a technician come to our house to replace the broken equipment. I will admit that it is my fault for skimming the the fine print, and I mean almost unreadable fine print, on the back of the Vivint contract. It does say there that you must have the Vivint premium service package to waive the service fee. Our new Vivint doorbell camera has the same connection issues. I once again called Vivint and was told that we would need to have a repeater installed between the camera and the panel. The panel shows that the signal strength on the camera is above 90%. Vivint said that they will charge another $49 service call fee to have a repeater installed. I argued that the system was not installed properly if we needed a repeater, but they will not waive the fee.
